Spain: How to Reduce Excessive Physical Restraints Against Seniors in Nursing Homes (Global Action on Ageing)

The Spanish Confederation of Senior Citizens warned against the excessive use of physical restraints in nursing homes for older adults as a means of preventing accidents.  Such restraints indeed result in a loss of autonomy, dignity and self-esteem. Researchers found several physical effects in restricting seniors' mobility including: pressure ulcers, infections, loss of muscle tone, atrophy and more. In Catalonia, 20 percent of old people who live in residences are subject to restraints.
